Kenley’s Room: An Update

A couple of weeks ago, I got completely fed up with the changing table in Kenley’s room. We bought it along with the crib before we had Brayden, so it’s definitely gotten a ton of use. But the open shelving was just a disaster area ALL the time, the cats go behind there and the extra clutter that it collected was starting to drive me insane.

I started looking online for a dresser that I could use as a changing table. The one I absolutely loved? $500. Not a chance, said the hubs. And I really didn’t want to spend that much on one either. I decided to wait, keep looking, and just keep dealing with what I had.

A few days later, we were up at my aunts. She has been selling some furniture for a friend (which is where I got the side table for Kenley’s room) so I asked her if she by chance had a dresser that would work as a changing table as well. Wouldn’t you know it, she did! It is one that she redid/painted a long time ago. She said I could “borrow” it for 18 years because if she ever finds a place for it in their home, she might want it back! That was fine by me!

We just changed out the hardware and after some organizing, we were set!

Cute, right? And to think that my aunt painted that! The top drawer has a divider in the middle, so diapers/wipes/creams/etc go on that side and the other side houses her burp cloths, socks, and hats. The middle drawer has onesies and pants, and the bottom drawer is pajamas. It freed up a lot of closet room as well, and now everything is contained instead of just out for everyone to see. It’s much better!

And just for fun, here is the other side of her room. I have been using my Nest of Posies bag as a diaper bag the last few days (Thank you Maegan!), and have all of her shoes/booties in the little basket on the table. The pile of clothes on the right? Already too small. So sad. Truth be told, having all the girly, fun things in her room is a LOT of fun. Don’t even ask to see Brayden’s room right now. It’s next on my list for an overhaul!

Nursery Reveal

Were you all wondering where my nursery progress was? Well, I am happy to say that it is 98% done! Woo! So here are some photos…

This is the view from the door. Thanks to my wide angle lens, this pretty much captures the entire room! The swing will eventually make it’s way out into the living room, but for now, it stays out of the way in here.

View from the window. The drawers need a little more organizing, but for the most part, it’s all done!

The table is the antique one that I got from my aunt. It still needs the drawer pull put on. The rattles on the table came with a couple of blankets that I bought. Brayden likes to take them off the table and run away with them. It starts early!

A close up of the pictures on the wall. I ordered them from Etsy. The first one says “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine” and the other one says “You make me happy when skies are gray.” I fell in love with these and knew they would be perfect in baby girl’s room!

The sign above the crib says “No one else will ever know the strength of my love for you…after all, you’re the only one who knows what my heart sounds like from the inside.”  I saw this saying on a Pinterest board somewhere, and had a friend of ours paint it on the sign for us. I am in LOVE with it.

That’s about it! Her closet is full, almost to the brim, with stuff all the way to 2T. I hit quite a few garage sales this summer, so she is in pretty good shape! Her bag for the hospital is packed and ready to go as well. Phew! I can’t believe she will be here so SOON!

The Nursery #2

Since we found out we are having a baby girl, I have been scouring the internet looking for cute girl bedding. Luckily, my husband knows that I have ALWAYS wanted to do a girl’s nursery, and he has been pretty awesome about it. He also loves what I have picked out so far, and as long as I abide by his only rule (no painting!), we are on the same page.

I spotted this bedding at Pottery Barn Kids and fell in love.

When I saw that some of the pieces were on backorder, I went ahead an ordered the fitted crib sheet and the bumper. Since we have cats that like to creep around our house, I decided against the bed skirt- knowing it would just be full of cat hair! When I went up to Babies R US over the weekend, I picked up a hot pink jersey crib sheet for the extra.
See those green flowers? They almost identically match the table that I bought from my aunt over the weekend! I love me some pink, but I didn’t want to do TOO much pink- so I think the light green table will create a nice balance. Plus, I think it is a piece that will grow with her as well. Photos of the table to come (mostly because I have some other things to move out of the nursery before I have room for it!)
Also on my list- curtains, a lamp, and a few wall decorations. Lots of fun to come!

Master Bedroom Redo: Paint and Bedding

So as most of you know, 2 weekends ago, my bff Jacqui and her hubby Mike came down to hang out paint our master bedroom. Mike used to paint professionally in high school and a little in college, and I was so glad he agreed to come. I am NOT talented with a roller! Jacqui and I took care of the trimming and Mike did the big work. The best part about painting this room is that all of the trim is coming out next fall and being replaced with what is in the other part of the house. SO NO TAPING! :)

The Before- super Boring. Super Olive green.

I have to tell you, the paint color is not a drastic change. The olive green we had before was more or less a neutral. The new color is just more brown- something that I will be able to work with more in the future as opposed to that green that was for a very specific set of bedding. With me? ok!

Mike made me roll the last little bit, but I was terrible at it. :)
And now, for it’s current state!

The natural light in our room isn’t great but you get the picture! I LOVE our West Elm duvet, and Brandon loves the down comforter. It is just WAY more cozy. I still have to look for some things to hang on the walls, and of course, we are still wanting to build a bed. It is most definitely not finished, but I am very happy with the turnout so far!

My Dream Bedroom

I am SO not a decorator. I mean, I love reading decorating blogs and seeing how to tutorials, but I just don’t have the knack for it. Not in the least.

A couple months back, I bought some bedding that I liked. I wasn’t in love with it, but I was desperately seeking change. When I got it home, I still liked it, but it wasn’t what I wanted. The down comforter is too short for the bed (a huge pet peeve of mine) and the coverlet that goes over it collects so much cat hair that I could probably get a sister for Chloe and Sadie. And no bedskirt.

I just don’t have the knack for finding the perfect, cozy, warm, functional bedding.

I want it to look like I could lay in there forever, read comfortably with enough light, and be cozy. Like these….

That’s the other issue- paint. I painted our room a green color to match our old bedding…and now I wish it was a more neutral gray or beige. I’m trying to get Brandon convinced, but so far, nothing.
Our priorities are working for my parents right now, and then hopefully, getting Brayden’s big boy room almost done. As in done enough because we have some overnight guests lined up in January and they will need a place to sleep! And then I will work on Brayden’s room. Our priorities are everywhere but our own room, which is fine. We have bedding and a super awesome mattress- I just want it to look more “us” and not so college kids on a super non-existant budget.
Brandon and I are really open to the idea of building a headboard or even putting something up that LOOKS like a headboard. He is so talented in that area, I know we could do something really neat. I came across this article for this glorious build-it-yourself bed, and I think we might tackle it.
Brandon is still doing some figuring and all of that- but he was really excited when I showed him the article. And I know how proud he would be to make a bed for us. It would be awesome. Keep your fingers crossed!
SO, those of you that are awesome at home decor, what should I do about the bedding dilemma?

Our monogram drawing

Here is what Jacinda made for us. I love it, and I can’t wait to get it framed!

Brandon loves it because of the farming reference, and I love it because SHE did it- making it super unique. Thanks again, Jacinda! We love it!

bedroom makeover?

The blogging world has really opened my eyes to the world of interior decorating-how tiny changes can create a dramatic difference in a space. I am awful at decorating. I get it from my mom. We just never acquired the knack for that kind of thing! BUT, I do take a huge interest in it, and I love reading blogs by people who are good at it- specifically Bryn and Joi.

But, I need some help. I reallllllly want to paint our master bedroom, but our hands are kind of full with our new patio project (pictures to come!) SO I think new bedding is the way to go. Our paint color is a mix of forest-y and sage-y green, that matches the bedding we currently have….oh, and in hindsight? I wish we would have just painted everything a beige color. Seriously. BUT since I am stuck with the green (which I do LIKE, it is just hard to find bedding to match) I started looking for something new.

Where do you go to find a new look?

my dream room for Brayden

Sometime after Brayden was born, he got the nickname “Moose”. I don’t exactly remember where or how it started, but it sure has stuck! If I see clothes that have a moose on them, I instantly buy them- especially if they are on sale! As much as I don’t want to even THINK about my little boy being big enough for a twin bed, I think I would like to stick with the moose theme when he moves to a big boy bed. Here are a couple comforter sets that I found online.

OR- stick with a neutral comforter and accessorize. The wheels are already turning. I feel like his “big boy” room could be my chance to redeem myself in the decorating aspect. His nursery didn’t turn out quite like I had envisioned, so I want to make sure I do a better job of thinking things through for his big boy room. Good thing I have a year or two!

what I want in a master bedroom

While on the hunt for inspiration for our master bedroom (oh, and so you aren’t disappointed, I don’t have the OK from the hubby or the funding for this job-yet!) I remembered seeing a picture of a fellow blogger’s master bedroom and it is pretty much everything I want! This is Dusty’s master bedroom from All Things G&D.

I love the paisley bedding that she has, and I found one that I love from Pottery Barn.

Of course, I really love the green walls in our bedroom, so maybe this would be more appropriate.

I want something that I can look at and say “Wow, I could lay around/read/sleep in this bedroom all day long!”

It’s no secret that I have been on the hunt for bedroom furniture for the last year or so. Brandon is really getting into the DIY home projects, and found an article on how to make a headboard out of bi-fold closet doors. We are still talking about whether that is something we would want to do to give our room a more grown up feel.

I am not a fan of our bedroom lamps (they are too small and don’t give off enough light to read) and I love the hotel feel of the lamps in Dusty’s room. Another plus: they are a huge space saver!

We have your run of the mill panel curtains in our bedroom as well, and they could use a lift. But curtains are my least favorite part of picking out new. I always feel like it is so boring, so I am still searching…

I just feel like this room has so much more potential! I am not a good interior designer by any means, but I am learning a lot from other bloggers, pictures, and websites. Hoepfully before the year’s end, Brandon and I can revamp our master bedroom into something more grown up, romantic, and functional.

it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

Sunday morning, Brandon and I hauled out all of our Christmas decorations and got to work while Brayden took a nap.

There are more scattered throughout the house, but I am in need of a few things:

  1. a table runner for my sofa table, so that I don’t have to use two old placemats to set my Willow Tree nativity set on.
  2. Something for the master bathroom and guest bathroom.
  3. A centerpiece for the kitchen table.

Maybe for next year!
