Potty Training

Potty Training.

These are two words I have dreaded since Brayden turned 2. I knew it was going to have to happen sooner or later. I just didn’t know how to start. And I was scared of failing, so I just kept putting it off. People kept saying he could be getting close to being ready, but I still kept putting it off.

But not any longer.

On Friday, on a whim, I told Brayden there was poop in his diaper. He repeated “poop”. THIS IS HUGE PEOPLE. Because he never just tries to repeat ANYTHING (hence the speech therapy) and in 2 seconds, he had a NEW WORD! So all morning, I kept asking him if there was poop in his diaper, and he would say no.

Then, all of the sudden, he started yelling POOP and went into the bathroom. I got the potty out, told him to sit on it, and that he could poop in the potty. He just sat there, kept saying poop, and then signed “all done” while saying “done”. Nothing, but hey, it was progress.

15 minutes later, he wanted back on the potty- and this time he peed! I was so excited! I made a big deal about it and he seemed pleased with himself.

After his nap, he pooped AND peed in the potty! More celebrating!

Hopefully, this is the start of something! And for you moms out there that have already been down this road, what worked best for your kids?

  1. We’re there too Julie. The advice I keep hearing is not to start until they’re ready. Brayden recognizing the words for it and willingly sitting on the potty are great signs! We’ve got a potty seat in 2 out of the 3 bathrooms in our house, an Elmo potty book, along with lots of really cute Handy Mandy underwear, so we’re (as in Bart and I) are definitely ready!

I am deathly afraid of potty training and N will be two in March. Did you start getting him used to the potty before this? I’m just curious how to go about all of this with her when the time comes!

  3. AAAAA! HOW EXCITING! Can you tell I’m a nanny for young children because poop is one of our main topics of conversation EVERY DAY. THIS IS AWESOME! Way to go Brayden!!!

  4. Wow! That’s awesome, big accomplishment for you both :)

  5. That’s awesome Julie!
